The reason for this sign is because most Asian bathrooms have the ceramic hole in the floor that they squat over to do their business. Our toilets are called Western Toilets over there and not all Japanese are familiar with them, especially people who live further from the major cities.

It’d be the same if they started installing Japanese toilets into American restrooms. They’d have to post a sign so Americans know how to properly use it. Not that many Americans have the leg muscles to squat and do their business.
